What is the Medfield rail trail? How was it built?
The Medfield Rail Trail is a 1.3-mile shared-use trail along the former Bay Colony Railroad running from Ice House Road to the Dover town line. On the trail, residents and their families enjoy walking, running, biking, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding on a path that is flat and mostly wooded, suitable for all ages and abilities. It also provides a direct connection to the Bay Circuit Trail, an extensive regional trail system.
The project involved the removal of the existing ties and rails within the railbed and regrading the surface, followed by installation of a non-erodible sub-surface of reclaimed asphalt topped by a layer of stone dust. The trail is generally 10 feet wide with 1.5-foot transitions on both sides to the existing vegetated areas.

Where is it located?
It runs from Ice House Road to the Dover town line. See more detail on this map. Parking is available on the dirt lot across from the start of the Rail Trail on Ice House Road, and along the entrance to the trail on Farm Street.

Who’s responsible for the rail trail initiative?
The Friends of the Medfield Rail Trail is a group of Medfield residents who led the initiative to get the Rail Trail built, funded by grants from MassTrails and donations. Town funds were not used. FMRT gets support from the Medfield Foundation, and the Bay Colony Rail Trail Association (the organization that was responsible for building the Needham Rail Trail), as well as donations from local residents and businesses. The Friends of the Medfield Rail Trail is a Medfield Foundation initiative.
